Lambay - Small Batch Blend & Single Malt

My first online tasting experience happened recently, during the Covid 19 lockdown. I was lucky enough to take part in the Lambay Whiskey Tweet Tasting The marketing campaign for this exciting range of Irish Whiskey is second to none, instantly striking. I was thoroughly impressed by the leaflets, promotional items and indeed the website.

Naturally, before taking part in the tasting, I wanted to learn a bit more about Lambay Whiskey and Lambay Island.

Lambay Whiskey started back in 2018 and has grown increasingly popular amongst critics. In this short amount of time they have been awarded a total of no less than twenty three awards internationally, a haul that is likely to keep growing up for some time.

A mere six people inhabit the two and a half square kilometre island of Lambay, which is located just 3 miles off the coast of Dublin, Ireland. As well as this it is also home to some rather interesting wildlife including Fallow deer and red-necked Wallabies which were introduced by Rupert Baring in the 1950’s.

Lambay Island
The bygone used lifeboat cottage is the location that has been elected for cask maturation.

Tasting

As part of the tasting we were asked to sample both the small batch blend and the single malt. All Lambay Whiskey is cognac cask finished. I enjoyed both immensely and will definitely be picking up both again in the (hopefully) near future.

Tasting notes : Small Batch Blend

Appearance: Striking golden colour, long legs run down the glass.

Nose: A subtle hint of cognac and a suggestion of flowers

Taste: Effortlessly smooth caramel at first then turning spicy.

Finish: Lingering aftertaste, warm and comforting like the solace of a dying fire on a damp and dusky winter’s night.

Tasting notes : Single Malt

Appearance: A beautiful autumnal russet presence with significantly denser tears.

Nose: Substantial scent of banana and lesser, malt.

Taste: Further malt tones and an oily warmth.

Finish: Enduring aftertaste with a gentle fruity pleasantness. A true enjoyment for the senses.

Overall I could not decide which I preferred so it looks like I will have to revisit these fine offerings again, any excuse eh?!
