Bulleit Bourbon - Frontier Whiskey

Bulleit was undoubtedly my first ‘proper’ venture into the world of bourbon. Of course I’d tried it before at parties and functions. However, if I'm being honest, that is not exactly the best place to experience something like this and give it the attention it rightfully deserves.

The Bulleit Distilling Company was founded in 1987 by Thomas E. BuIleit Jr., who was greatly inspired by his great-great-grandfather Augustus Bulleit, who made high-rye whiskey, Bulleits cornerstone. The distillery is located at the Kirin Brewing Company Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, Bourbons spiritual home.

Bulleit Bourbon is made with pure Kentucky limestone filtered water. Since temperature change is the primary factor in aging whiskey, Kentucky’s four distinct seasons provide ideal climate conditions for maturation. Having initially been bottled at 40% ABV for the UK market, it is now available at 45% ABV, having been introduced in 2014. So, most importantly, what’s it like?

The first sip takes a half second to register with the taste buds, once it does, I’m hooked! It’s warm, sweet and smooth and tremendously easy to drink neat. It’s effortless, warm and doesn't leave a strong aftertaste. It’s a wonderful russet colour.

Nose
A touch of orange, vanilla and and the slightest inkling of liquorice.

Taste
Caramel notes.

Finish
Silky smooth and incredibly moreish

Overall

A solid bourbon which is sensibly priced also. Well worth purchasing and sampling for yourself! It’s available in most supermarkets also.

Differences between whiskey and bourbon

Bourbon is primarily made from corn. Whiskey on the other hand is made from malted barley.

Bourbon is distilled in the United States of America, whilst the majority of Whiskey as you will most likely know is made in Scotland and Ireland.

By law, Bourbon must be made from a mash of at least 51% corn grain. Bourbon is usually matured in new, white oak barrels that have been charred.

Also check out some similar bourbons in this category/price range. Namely, Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey 101 and the much talked about Eagle Rare 10 year old.
