Nc'nean Organic Single Malt
The principles of Nc'nean are honestly inspiring. This whisky distillery has many values that I have been thoroughly impressed with.
Firstly this is a whisky produced from organic Scottish barley. Secondly, it is distilled in a certified carbon-neutral distillery. Thirdly, all bottles are 100% recycled.
An impressive marker has been set for their future and that of their peers, in a world that has, seemingly at the eleventh hour, finally begun to seriously ponder the future and wellbeing of this planet that we all call our home.
According to their website, their total carbon footprint for a whole year is less than one return plane journey from London to New York. Which is truly awe-inspiring.
The vision of its founder Annabel Thomas is clear and the positive results from a young distillery speak for themselves.
On top of being a fine whisky with an already impressive fan base, Nc'nean can also proudly say they are the first net-zero whisky distillery in the United Kingdom.
So what about the all-important liquid? Well, it's a thoroughly enjoyable dram, whilst the unique branding helps it stand out visually also.
Made from organic Scottish barley the Nc'nean is non-chill-filtered, nor is it coloured artificially.
Although located on the north-western tip of the beautiful Morvern peninsula in the west of Scotland, their barley is grown in the east of the country. Ten organic barley farmers supply this special grain.
Nc’nean has Biodynamic Association Certification which confirms the standards they apply to.
Nine-tenths of the water they use is just for cooling the vapour when it comes off the stills. Rainwater is recycled in its natural cooling pond. The benefits of this are that the same water can be used time and time again. There is no energy used to cool it down nor are there chemicals used to keep it clean.
Waste management is second to none either. Draff, the name which is given to the remnant of the barley, is presented to the local cattle for feeding. In 2021 Nc'nean diverted 99.97% of its waste from landfill. All materials are re-used when necessary.
Here are my tasting notes for Nc'nean organic Single Malt - 46% ABV
Nose
Citrus fruit, sugar cane, grass-like notes.
Taste
Vanilla, custard doughnut spice on the culmination.
Finish
Spiced and just a wee bit short for my liking.
Nc'nean should be proud of their liquid and how they go about making it. They have since released another whisky named 'Huntress'. Best of luck with that and keep doing what you are doing guys!
